[...] It is in understanding those needs framed against a failed banking system and an urgent requirement to rethink sustainability that we will see the new audit emerge. Of course some of the traditional audit skills will be needed, but the framework will be set by those progressive investors who understand the issues far better than the mainstream. It will come from a reworking of the banking system – perhaps in part along the lines of Kiva. I’ve been saying in recent times that I’d like to see the return of something that reflects the underlying principles behind the co-operative societies. But what of the analysis that accompanies investment? Check out what Valuecruncher has been considering in recent times: [...]

A great analysis of trend on on-line finance. A few paragraphs and a couple of charts summarize the past, the current and the future.

Internet has brought down much of the wall that keeps financial information from retail investors. With Web 2.0, Internet will advance to redefine the way investment research is conducted. It will be much easier for investors to exchange knowledge, processes, tools and expertise on investment research. Traditional equity research firms may not create the edge they used to bring to their clients. The advance in online social networking (collaboration) and the progress of XBRL implementation will fundamentally change the way investment research is conducted.

What an insightful quadrant graph. I agree with most of your speculation about the 4 different and divergent paths that the future could take us down. I could see elements of all four happening right now, although I truly believe that the locked off and sequestered financial world will see it's walls slowly cracked and crumbled, and the millions of retail investor queries of the outside investing world will rush in like a flood. The internet is the ultimate leveling field, just look what it did to the music, travel, movie, print journalism and dozens of other profit-stems-from-inefficent information-delivery industries. Open source is the wave of the future and I would love to see a world where all funds could be tracked, verified, and open for dialogue.
